Chard & District swimmers recently competed in the first two weekends of the Somerset County Championships held at Millfield School writes Hannah Pullinger.

The first weekend saw the long distance events (800 and 1500m freestyle) with Chard swimmers Lauren Harrison (14), Billie-Jo Dance (14), Lauren van den Barselaar (13) and Elisha Hawkins (12) all competing. Lauren Harrison’s time of 10.36.63 in the 800m improved on her own under 14 club record.

Last weekend saw 33 Chard competitors taking part in individual events, many achieving personal best times. Congratulations go to the following swimmers who all achieved places in finals: Luke van den Barselaar (16) was second in the boys’ 15/16 Youth final and sixth in the 100m backstroke championship, and the boys’ 15/16 youth final 100m breaststroke. Luke was also eighth overall in the 200m backstroke Championship.

Ben Fowler (15) was fourth in the boys’ 15/16 Youth final and seventh in the 100m backstroke championship.

Jake Hallam (16) was second in the boys’ 15/16 Youth final, fourth in the100m breaststroke championship, and second overall in the 200m butterfly championship.

The boys were on top form and went on to achieve silver medal position in the U16 Junior Medley relay along with team mate Daniel Andrews (16), and with Jamie Spiller (16) gold in the U16 Junior Freestyle relay.

Other individual County Qualifiers competing were: Boys: Michael Moulding 9, Henry Taswell 10, Ryan Adair 11, Lewis Pearson 12, Iain Ross 12, Paul Harrison 13, Jamie Pullinger 13, Oliver Bilbie 13, Jay Kindred 14, Jamie Lillington 14, Ashley Lillington 14, Girls: Helen Underwood 9, Megan Herbert 9, Jess Fowler 10, Jess Patch 10, Xanthe Dyer 10, Grace Haskins 11, Tamsin Edge 11, Abi Bonning 11, India Woodhams 11, Daniella Edge 13, Susan Ross 12, Melissa Hanson 14, Tessa Down 14, Abi Dare 15, Hannah Pullinger 16.
