Only Lyme were in action this week in the Championship League. They travelled to Wellworthy, returning with just one point thanks to a draw on Paul Pomeroy's rink.

The Lyme side are safe in the Championship with just one game to go, against Dorchester, which is a good achievement in their first season playing with the 'big boys'.

Dorset Men's Championship: Lyme 33 Wellworthy 54 - R Richardson, K Hickman, J Perry, P Eagles 11-21; B Parsons, C Barber, D Meylan, M Preston 7-18; J Eaton, S Pomeroy, B Rattenbury, P Pomeroy 15-15.

Two ladies' teams travelled to Broadstone to take part in the June Culpin Memorial Trophy. They were unfortunate to lose by the odd point, Kathy Clissold's rink unlucky to drop a seven on the 16th end.

Lyme 38 Broadstone 39: H Dowling, D Courtenay-Smith, J Kesterton, K Clissold 16-21; J Moffitt, S Applebee, N Stephens, J Parsons 22-18.

It's been a busy week on the friendly front, despite the weather which resulted in a cancelled game away to Budleigh Salterton.

Finally, it was the weekend of the trip to Leamington for the Lyme trio of Judith Moffitt, Maureen Gillett and Kathy Clissold. They were representing Dorset as the finalists in the County competition. They had a stern test in their opening round with Northamptonshire; battle as they did, they were to lose quite easily to superior bowling.

I will never describe ladies' bowling as 'dull' ever again. I watched the final of the under 31s between Somerset and Yorkshire and, being a Somerset lad, I was rooting for the West Country side. The 'Scrumpies' finally lost by two shots, but it was a carnival atmosphere throughout with men and women with their hair dyed in their team's colours, not to mention claxons, rattles and whistles.
