Honiton Bowls - The ladies' singles final between Carole Fisher and Shirley Hiscocks was a highly entertaining match full of quality bowling.

The ladies' singles final between Carole Fisher and Shirley Hiscocks was a highly entertaining match full of quality bowling. Shirley made the early running and continued to hold a narrow lead into the latter stages and held a match winning position at 20-18. With tension mounting amongst both players and spectators, Carole held her nerve to take the shot and force the match into another end. On what was to be the final end, it was Carole who appeared to be in control and lay the two shots she needed to win. However, Shirley was not to be denied and drew the shot to win the championship 21-19. Well done to both ladies on producing such a wonderful match.l The men's finalists, Trevor Pipe and Bill Sheerman weren't quite able to match the ladies with neither player hitting peak form and seemingly unable to master the rink. Trevor, playing the more consistent bowls, seemed to be heading for a comfortable win but Bill managed to lift his game and scores of 4 and 3 put him back within five shots. Trevor responded and continued to play the steadier bowls to run out a 21-13 winner. l In the DCLIBA semi- finals, Lynda Dommett and Rosemary Hirons, despite a brave performance, lost 13 - 25 in the pairs. There was good news in the fours however, when Rosemary, together with Rita Barwick, Ann Hillyear and Pearl Hackwood, totally dominated their game against Torbay and ran out comfortable 29-4 winners. It was a morale-boosting win as they set off for Nottingham and the national finals. Good luck ladies.l World rated bowler Greg Harlow was at the club this week. As well as offering advice and running a very informative question and answer session, he entertained the spectators by bowling a few ends against our singles champions and several very excited members of our junior section. It was a very enjoyable day and thanks go to Graham Bowring of Honiton sports who sponsored the event.l The men finished their over-60s leagues season with a much improved performance against Padbrook winning on two rinks drawing on one and suffering just one defeat. A difficult season in the ICL also came to an end with a defeat against ISCA, Trevor Pipe's rink being the only winners.l Friendly matches results, v Taunton Vivary won 55-52, v Axminster won 86-32, v Moonfleet lost 52-136, v Pinces Gardens won 97-56, v Bovey Tracey won 106-59.
