The magnificent grounds of Millfield School provided the setting for a Middle Distance and a Sprint Distance triathlon race last weekend, writes Dennis Elliot.
The Middle Distance event, comprising of a 1.2 mile swim in the Olympic-sized pool was followed by a 56 mile bike ride out to and up the Cheddar Gorge and back with finally a 13.1 mile run around the grounds was the target of the N1 tri club.
Entering an event like this, if you are new to the sport, can be a daunting experience but it is also possible to race as relay team which allows newcomers to taste the atmosphere and strut their stuff and receive the support of the more experienced racers. The club entered six teams in all and were delighted to come home in second and third place overall. Newcomers Sarah Chipping, Mike Shilingford, Meg Knowles, and Fran Bond all did themselves and their teams proud. The star turn was Karl Hodson who flew around the bike course recording the fastest time of the day of 2:24 and with team mates Ben Matthews and Richard Harvey made the podium in second place. Tom Elliott also excelled with a 1:22 half marathon which was the second fastest of all competitors. In the Sprint event, Vanessa Glynn Jones won her age category while Jane Down, who has caught the triathlon bug from her 'Ironman' husband, was fourth in hers.
