The Seniors took to the golf course in a typical English summer, heavy showers, blustery wind and occasional glimpses of the sun.

This did not deter 80 golfers competing in the favoured Stableford competition. Division 1 was won by Mr Dependable, Bill Spice, with 35 points followed by Vic Wood 34 points, Ron Craig 33 points, Bob Bilyard 32 points and Pat Purtell on 31 points.

It was in Division 2 that high scores were achieved. Leading the way was Don Leach with a superb score of 41 points with John Foster 39 points, Chris Street 38 points, Jack Phillips 37 points and Mike Jones 34 points amongst the prizes.

Only three twos were achieved with each recipient rewarded with a handsome haul of 18 balls.

l Honiton Golf club had a busy weekend. Saturday saw the annual Honiton challenge take place, where the four sections of the club, Men, Ladies, Juniors and Seniors, battled it out for the coveted Honiton Challenge trophy.

This 10-a-side individual competition is keenly contested with one member from each section playing as a fourball, and needing a top six finish in order for their score to count.

The holders of the trophy, the Juniors, just failed to retain it as the Seniors proved too experienced for the opposition, winning the trophy for the first time.

l Honiton hosted the Royal Airforce Association (RAFA) men's open competition.

Honiton has had a long association with RAFA this being the 35th anniversary of the competition.

The day had many highlights not least a 213yd hole-in-one on the fourth hole by Mike Roberts of Wrangaton and a holed 180yd fairway wood on the 11th for a two and five points by Richard Jessop of Tiverton.

Winning the competition with 42 points was Honiton Secretary Brian Young and his partner Richard Jessop on countback from the Club Captain Nick Richards and his partner Roy Bumpstead. More importantly the day raised over £300 for RAFA for their work with injured RAF personel.

l Due to the weather conditions, the ladies' American Foursomes competition had to be called off after just a few holes.

On Sunday the Ladies played their EWGA Medal. 1, Jackie Seager 90-14-76; 2, Elizabeth Ward 94-17-77.

l The Mixed competition this week was the Steele Perkins Cup - an individual Stableford, but played as mixed. This competition was started in 1959 and the cup was presented by Dr Steele-Perkins the first Honiton member to be given life membership. The winner was Olwen Eaton, with 39pts, from the ladies' vice captain Elizabeth Ward with 37pts on countback from Chris Poole.
