Honiton B make winning start to Over-60s League campaign

Honiton Bowling Club hosted the Rock Park Bowling Club, Barnstaple, when they returned from their tour to Bournemouth, writes Joan Mackintosh.

The match started with a spider and proceeds were in aid of Visually Impaired Bowls England.

In terms of the outcome, it resulted in a loss for Honiton (86-111), but there were wins on three of the seven rinks with the top rink being the one of T Young, J Broom, T Lambert and M Seaborne, who won 19-13.

Following the match everyone enjoyed a meal prepared by the ladies of the club.

There was league action last week with the men’s Over-60s B team in action for their first game, entertaining Topsham C. The Honiton team proved to be in fine form as they won on both rinks with overall shots of 16, gaining the maximum eight points. However, when travelling to North Tawton, they were narrowly defeated on both rinks.

The men’s Over-60s A team played Crediton A at home and won 37-24, winning one rink and losing the other to bank six points. The winning rink, with a score of 24 shots to eight was the one of W Heard, K Clarke, K Large. However, when the team travelled into Exeter to meet Heavitree they slipped to a 42-21 defeat. They did have one rink success with M Seaborne, M Dart, G Stafrace, who were trailing 10-2 after nine ends but recovered to score 11 shots to two over the final eight ends to seal success on the 18th end and so bank two points for the team. Honiton ladies played a friendly match against Maderia at home and they defeated the visitors 46-35 with a 22-4 success for the rink of J Granger, M Parsons and A Hillyear.

A mixed friendly was played at Taunton Vivary where Honiton lost by 78 shots top 56. However, there was one draw rink with the one of R Rogers, G Adlem, D Hawkins and S Howell ending in a 16-all tie.

The first East of Exe League match saw the team travel to Culm Vale where Honiton lost by 67 shots to 50. The highest winning rink for Honiton was the one of G Osborne, D Hawkins, A Hillier, S Howell, who won 18-15.

Last, but not least, in the Champion of Champions match, Gerry Stafrace played D Joslin at Heavitree and sealed a terrific 21-15 success to set up a meeting with R Paxton at Crediton.
