Honiton Bowls Club Fortescue Trophy Shield success for trio

The Fortescue Trophy Shield is presented each year at the annual charity bowling match at Honiton, writes Joan Mackintosh.

This trophy was presented to the club 20 years ago by Mr and Mrs Fortescue in memory of his grandfather, a founder member of the English Bowling Association and friend of the cricketer W G Grace, who was the first elected president of the English Bowling Association.

All funds raised at the match will go to the Admiral Nurses. After the match Mr and Mrs Fortescue enjoyed the buffet tea with the members. This year, the winners of the shield were the team of G Kille, N Baxter and W Heard with a score of plus 12.

In other action, there was a mixed friendly match at home to the Nomads that saw Honiton win on all rinks on their way to an overall 97-51 success.

The top Honiton rink was the one of D Roberts, Joan Mackintosh, N Baxter and M Bright.

The East of Exe match last week saw Honiton play at home against Cullompton.

Honiton won one rink, drew one rink and lost on two, but did manage to secure an overall win at 67-52, with the top rink being the one of S Phillips, G Stafrace, Y Rayner and T Pipe (28-6). The ladies’ Over-50s team played at home against Seaton and banked two points to the four taken by the visitors. The top home rink was the one of L Carless, D Courtney and H Chambers (20-19).

The men’s County Trophy match against Feniton saw Honiton win one rink, draw another and lose on two, but they finished with sufficient shots to win the match overall.

In the men’s Over-60s League, Honiton A played Tiverton WE A at home, but went down 56-31 with the Mid Devon side gaining eight points.

The men’s B team entertained Heavitree C and won on one rink by 12 shots.

However, they lost the other by 15 shots and so lost overall by just three shots. The B team banked two points for their efforts.
