Honiton Seniors drew their match at Stover Golf Club, which was played in pleasant conditions, writes John Pawley.

With the course in good condition, most players used the opportunity to record creditable scores.

Captain Alan Pollock was singled out by his Stover counterpart as worthy of special note for his approach play and putting.

Vice-captain Mike Sennitt took the prize for nearest the pin on the short seventh. The result was perceived as a good one for Honiton, and indicative of the friendly nature of this competition.

The mixed competition last week was a Treble Six, where the first six holes are played as a better ball, followed by six holes of in a greensome format and the last six as foursomes.

Clear winners were lady captain Jane Watts and Paul Ritchie with an excellent 38 points.

Sue Kelson and Terry Linsdell were second with a respectable 34 points, closely followed by Liz Wood and Robert Hendrick (33).

On a reasonably sunny Wednesday morning the ladies played a three-ball better ball over 14 holes with two score to count.

Some good scores were posted despite the recent treatment on the greens, where putting was tricky to say the least.

The winners were Henrietta Bradshaw, Sharon Rouse and Leslie Farley with 63 points followed by Janet Hughes, Susan Hyde and Chris Luttman with 62 points and third were Anne Davies, Linda McLaughlin and Lesley Oxenham with 60 points.

Lady captain Watts has chosen the Devon Freewheelers as her charity for the year, alongside the club captain.

Afterwards the ladies enjoyed their traditional spring lunch. Daniel Lavery, the founder of the Devon Freewheelers, gave an inspirational talk about the charity and its work. An impromptu collection raised more than £220 in donations - a brilliant response.

A practice day was available on Tuesday for the Devon Vets team at Barnstaple ahead of their Emerton Court fixture against Portmore Golf Club.

What was gained on the practice day didn’t help the Honiton guys as the result was a resounding 4-1 win for Portmore.

Our only successful pairing was the one of Peter Clarke and Alan Devenny.

At Honiton the next day, in extremely wet conditions, more than 40 Seniors started their routine competition, a medal and eclectic combined.

Many players were unable to complete the full course and full praise should be given to those who did.

The rain ensured that immediate computer entry was not possible, but Andy Sharland excelled with the only two, at the 12th, earning himself 28 brand new balls.

The winner in Division One was Peter Clarke with a round of 72 followed by Max Pipe on 73, Jim Wallis on 76 then Andy Sharland on count-back.

The final place was taken by Stan Squire with a round of 77.

In Division Two the result had to wait until the final two scores came in, resulting in Howard Pritchard being declared the winner with a score of 72, followed by Mike Delaney on 74, Bob Cockett on 75 and Rob Sexton on 77 with Peter Blake on 78.

Considering the conditions the scores were good, and some players may take solace in improving their eclectic scores.

Honiton B Team get off to a flying start to their summer campaign with a convincing 5-1 home win against Sidmouth.

Congratulations to captain Dave Chaffey and the team.

It was also a good weekend for the Parker Trophy Team, with a format of scratch foursomes match-play you really have to be on top of your game to win, so well done to James Drew, James Spiller, Barry Dunn, Mark Tierney, John Tierney and Rob Willey, who were the winners over Crediton by 2-1 at the East Devon GC at Budleigh.

Special mention should be made to the pairing of John Tierney and Rob Willey for securing the winning point in the last game, at the first play-off hole
