Honiton Colts made short work of Exeter when they pair met at the weekend, writes Paz Parratt.

The young Lacemen started brightly and following the opening exchanges Exeter struggled to get any forward movement. The first try from Honiton was run in from Charlie Wright and Ross Oaten slotted the conversion.

Honiton spent the next 15 minutes camped in Exeter’s half and it was only a loose ball that allowed Exeter to run in to earn their only points of the game. Brushing off the disappointment, Honiton began to dominate all over the park. Harry Wright was next across the whitewash and again Oaten added the extras. With Honiton controlling the game they may have been guilty of being over confident and a couple of tries went astray. Oaten, playing out of position, was next across the line following a strong run up the wing to take the Lacemen in to the break with a handsome, and deserved, 19-5 advantage.

From the restart Exeter tried in vain to get a forward moving game flowing, but Honiton mopped up any pressure and forced Exeter back in to their own 22 for long periods.

Dion Warner was next across as he carved his way through and this was followed by a passage of play when the Lacemen back started to hit the gaps in Exeter’s back line on a regular basis and, from one such situation, Will Tyers weaved through to get his first points of the game.

With the score 29-5 the game was all but won and Exeter struggled to keep their composure. Wright took the next try as he charged through to dot down under the sticks. Oaten had no trouble slotting the extras to take the game a well and truly 36-5 out of reach. As the clock ticked, Exeter tried franticly to add consolation points, but the Lacemen stood firm and deprived them of any further score. It was Wright who closed the game out with another try to complete the scoring and give the side a convincing 41-5 success.

Dion Warner’s work rate earned him the Lacemen’s Man of the Match award. This weekend the side entertain Kingsbridge.
