With the weather doing its worst, no golf was possible last week at Honiton, but this did not stop the other activities that happen this time of year - namely the various sections’ annual general meetings, which traditionally see the new captains take the helm, writes Ann Desmoulins.

Popular ladies’ captain Janet Hughes had organised a farewell competition for the ladies, but, not for the first time, this had to be cancelled as the course was waterlogged.

The annual meeting did take place the following day at which she summarised the section’s achievements, which this year were fairly impressive with Janet and partner Sue Ritchie reaching the quarter-finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes, played at St Pierre, and the Sheelah Creasy team qualifying for the quarter-finals at Exeter Golf and Country Club.

She then presented her captain’s badge to her successor, the equally popular Elizabeth Rogers, with the hope that she would have as a successful and enjoyable year as Janet herself had had, at which point the new captain completed the business of the day.

The Honiton seniors has had just the one opportunity to hold a competition so far this year, such has been the soggy state since the start of January.

Last week saw ‘more of the same’ and a waterlogged course meant that the seniors’ annual meeting was held at the clubhouse without delay.

The outgoing captain Mike Sennitt was well praised for his work over the past year by the club president Max Pipe and John Pawley, to whom he handed over the captaincy for 2018 and the competition shirt.

Hopefully the weather will be better to enable play in the coming week!
