Three young partnerships from Honiton Gymnastics Club were named south west champions and one more took a bronze medal at last weekend’s South West Novice Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships.

The results, which confirmed Honiton’s junior gymnasts as among the best in the region, were a fitting end to the acrobatic gymnastics season, which began in February with a similar haul of medals.

Medal-winning performances came in a variety of disciplines. Erin Blackmore and Shelley Quick earned the highest scores of the whole competition to take the grade 1 girls’ pair title – ahead of 20 other partnerships from around the south west – while other successes included; Thomas Merrick and Georgina Craig who landed gold in the Prep A mixed pair category; Emma Saunders, Katie Studley and Chloe-Mae Outram, who picked up gold in the grade 1 girls’ trio and Jade Zarczynski, Felicity Marx and Skye Symons who won bronze in the grade 1 girls’ trio event.

In all 25 gymnasts from the club were on duty at the championships, all putting in very good performances.

Helen Reddy, head high performance coach at Honiton Gymnastics Club, said: “This is a great finish to the acrobatic gymnastics season for our youngsters and a great indication of how much potential we have within the club. Erin and Shelley just missed out on the medals early in the year, so it was great for them to up their performance and finish third. It was a superb performance by Emma, Katie, and Chloe-Mae too, while Thomas and Georgina did excellently in their first regional competition.”

This weekend Honiton’s older gymnasts compete in their south west championships at Well Springs Leisure Centre in Taunton.

With the popularity of acrobatic gymnastics growing in Honiton, the club is running an increased number of sessions on Mondays, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays, and welcomes girls and boys of any age to get along to sessions at Honiton Leisure Centre and try out this exciting sport.
