A team of acrobats from Honiton Gymnastics Club has just returned from the Geneva International Acro Cup clutching a haul of medals and as winners of the competition’s overall team trophy.

The 15 gymnasts - aged between 10 and 21 – were competing at the annual international gymnastics competition, which featured performers from countries including Russia, Ireland, South Africa and Switzerland.

The talented youngsters brought home six gold medals, four silvers, two bronzes, and two fourth places.

The high performance coach at Honiton Gymnastics Club, Helen Reddy said: ““Our gymnasts competed excellently and represented both the club and Honiton admirably. It is always satisfying to perform well when you go to competitions abroad, so for so many of our gymnasts to take top honours in Switzerland is credit not only to them, but also the progress that the gym club is currently making. Winning the overall team trophy made the trip even more rewarding.”

The gymnasts included students from Honiton Community College, Offwell Primary School, The Kings School, The Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis, and Ivybridge Community College.

There were two gold medals for the women’s trio of Molly Thompson, Faye Miles and Charlotte Bowen; two gold medals for Buster Tutcher and Ashley Wallis in 11-16 men’s pairs; a gold and a silver medal for Josh Jackson and Charlotte Beviss in 11-16 mixed pairs; a gold and a silver medal for Adam Fullick and Megan Jones in 11-16 mixed pairs; two silver medals for Kaisha Dessalines-Wright and Alice Hewstone in 11-16 girls’ pairs; two bronze medals for Sean Kingston and Megan Cross in 11-16 mixed pairs; and two fourth places for Georgia Rooke and Natalya Pushkarev.

Reddy said: “We now take our highest level gymnasts to an international competition each year, and it’s a great opportunity for them not only to compete against gymnasts from different countries but also to make new friends and broaden their horizons.”

Gymnasts that competed in Geneva will be participating much closer to home in their next event – Honiton Gym Club’s annual Club Competition this coming Saturday (July 6) - which will see gymnasts aged three to 22 years competing at all levels of ability at Honiton Leisure Centre.

There are opportunities for gymnasts of all ages (including adults) at Honiton Gym Club. For more information visit www.honitongymclub.org or contact Helen Reddy on 07825 181693, hnayler@hotmail.com
