The end of the outdoor season is now just days away and it has been a great success for the Honiton Bowling Club in particular for the ladies’, writes Tony Broughton.

Sue Evans is County four-wood and two-wood champion, as well as National four-wood single’s runner-up whilst Carole Binmore is County two-wood singles runner-up and the Honiton Bowling Club have also been crowned ladies’ County Inter-Club champions.

The men have not reached such exulted heights, but they did make some major contributions to the Section Three side with no less than six of the 24 players that won this year’s County Coronation Cup, this included three of our junior members, Kieran Daniels, Scott Eveleigh and Liam Crawford.

Kieran and Scott of course were also part of the four that won the Sidmouth Jubilee Cup for the first time in its 56-year history.

At this time of the year Bowls Club’s organise their tours, Honiton is no exception and their annual tour grows each year. This week 51 people travelled to Falmouth to stay at the Penmere Manor Hotel and play four matches against Cornish opposition.

Because demand for the tour has grown, all four matched were seven mixed rinks.

On the journey to Cornwall the party dropped off at the Jamaica Inn for a coffee and comfort break before continuing to Truro where they played Truro City Bowls Club in the afternoon, losing narrowly.

Tuesday saw a morning shopping trip into Truro before a narrow defeat to Chacewater Bowling Club.

Wednesday morning was spent in Falmouth before an afternoon visit to Mylor Bridge which produced a Honiton win.

The final day was spent in Mevagissey before going to play on Cornwall’s Middleton Cup green at St Austell.

As expected this green was super to play on and Honiton managed to win the match by 18 shots.

This was a tremendous tour, the weather was excellent all four days, the greens were brilliant, the company even more brilliant and a good Cornish cream tea was had at every venue.

Fines imposed on players and others for misdemeanours made during the tour raised £150 enabling the club to reach its £1,000 target for the Honiton Day Hospice Care.

For Norman Oliver, one of our older members, it was an opportunity to visit a local junior school where he had spent a number of years as headmaster.

Honiton like to visit different areas every year and next year they go to Stratford-upon-Avon.

If you would like to be part of a winning club with acknowledge friendly members then you have an opportunity to try out the game at the Honiton Indoor rink on Sunday, September 21 between 10am and 2pm.

Equipment and refreshments will be provided free of charge.
