Honiton Petanque suffered a decisive defeat in their latest Devon League match, losing 4-1 at Ottery St Mary.
This followed a 3-2 home defeat by the same team a fortnight earlier. The team struggled to come to terms with the very different, much harder terrain at Strawberry Lane, and were facing a strong, long established side who are currently leading the league.
The triples round was soon over when Cecily Young, Larry Halliwell and Jenny Lavender, along with Janet Driscoll, Chris Bigmore and Charlie O’Reilly were well beaten 13-1 and 13-3 respectively.
The first doubles game quickly followed when Driscoll and O’Reilly went down 13-1. There were signs that the team were getting to grips with the surface when Halliwell and Young put up a dogged fight before losing 13-7, and Lavender and Bigmore managed to win the final doubles 13-11.
Honiton petanque team captain Chris Bigmore said: “In the end we were just pleased to bring home a point.
“We have only just begun our second season in the league and this was valuable experience.
“Ottery are favourites to win the title this year, so I’m pleased to have got these two games out of the way and put three points on the board.”
The next two games in May see Honiton entertain both North Devon sides, TorridgeU3A and Pig On The Hill (Westward Ho!).
