Honiton Petanque Club got off to a good start in the Devon League after a Sunday double header against two visiting North Devon clubs.

Their first match, against Torridge U3A, was played in very wet conditions, but spirits were raised after a comfortable 4-1 victory for the home side.

In the first round, both triple teams of Cecily Young, Tony Prior and Larry Halliwell and Jenny Lavender, Chris Bigmore and Charlie O’Reilly won their games 13-2 and 13-5 respectively. In the doubles round, Young and Halliwell, followed by Prior and O’Reilly secured the match with 13-8 and 13-11 wins. The final pairing of Lavender and Bigmore narrowly lost their game 13-12.

With two points in the bag the Mountbatten Park side then faced the 2017 champions, Pig On The Hill, in improving conditions.

This closely fought match ended in a 3-2 defeat for Honiton against tough opponents.

The first round of triples ended all square with Young, Ron Hutchinson and Halliwell going down 13-7. Lavender, Bigmore and O’Reilly then levelled the match with a 13-6 win. In the doubles, Hutchinson and O’Reilly lost 13-5, but a losing bonus point was secured with a 13-7 win by Young and Halliwell. In the deciding doubles game Lavender and Bigmore were beaten 13-8.

Honiton captain Chris Bigmore was pleased with the team’s performance. He said: “Three points is a solid start to the season, and with the next two matches against Chudleigh and Plymouth also being at home, we need to take as much as we can from these games.”
