Honiton Running Club turned out in force for the inaugural running of the Stockland Scamper 10k multi-terrain race last Sunday, writes Judy Davey.

The race was organised jointly by Axe Valley Runners and Stockland Primary Academy PTFA and the winner was 16-year-old Jake Smith of AVR in the amazing time of 37 minutes 27 seconds.

Kevin Hawker was first back for Honiton coming third overall in 41:13 also winning his category.

Ben Stone followed delighted with his run to come sixth in 42:52. Young Iain Ross had a cracking race to come nine overall in 45:20. Richard Harvey had to stop twice to tie his shoelace but still managed 14th in 46:49 one place ahead of Rod Inglis who finished 22 seconds later to take the first male 50 prize. Steve Davey was next in 20th place in 48:41 followed by Howard Bidmead who raced back as fast as he could so he could jump on the PA system!

He finished 22nd in 49:36. New member Phil Bartlett showed his good form to come 24th in 50:33. Bruce Strawbridge took it steadily and was pleased with his 26th place in 51:02. Judy Davey was third lady and won her category coming 28th overall in 52:33. This was the first race John Burgess had taken part in for a while and was happy with his 38th place in 55:25. He was followed one place and 29 seconds later by Tim Wigram who completed the 10k line-up for Honiton. There were 66 finishers.

The 3k was extremely well attended with 83 runners taking part. The race was won by Molly Smith in 11:26. Oliver Grimshaw was the first Honiton runner back coming fourth in 13:08. He was followed by Flo Swan who won her age category in 13:13 and was second girl overall. Thomas Lilley came ninth in 13:42 and Jasmine Stone was next back coming 16th in 14:17 and winning her category. Alfie Siggers had a good run to come 20th in 14:32 just ahead of Ashleigh Ford-Cosens who finished six seconds later. Jasmine’s younger brother Harrison completed Honiton’s line-up to come 40th in 16:42.

Another beautiful late summer’s day added to the great atmosphere. Thanks to all the marshals for their great support and to the landowners but especially Emma Parris for all her hard work and for being the brain child of this fantastic new race.
