Honiton’s Beviss sparkles at Stoke-on-Trent

Honiton’s Charlotte Beviss took part in the British Open Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships, held at Stoke-on-Trent.
The 11-year-old year seven student at Colyton Grammar School competed in the Mixed Pair category for 11-16 year olds, with her partner Josh Jackson from Plymouth.
The pair competed against five other mixed pairs from clubs within the UK, and one pair who travelled from Bulgaria!
On the first day of the competition Bevis and Jackson performed two clean routines, showing off a full range of combined and individual balance and dynamic acrobatic skills, choreographed to set music pieces. Their combined score of 51.35 (out of a maximum 60.00) saw them in fourth place at the end of the day, and earned them a worthy place in the finals the following morning.
For the finals the pair performed their dynamic routine once again. However, the intensity of the previous day’s competition had clearly taken its toll, and a couple of uncharacteristic errors by both partners saw their final score come in 0.65 below their equivalent mark the previous day.
The high standard of all competitors in the finals meant that they had to settle for a fifth place finish, still very commendable in light of the quality of other competitors, and a credit to the hard work and dedication put in by both partners and their coaches at Honiton Gymnastics Club over the past 12 months.
Young Beviss received funding towards her expenses from Colyton Grammar School’s ‘Bradbeer Bursary Fund’.
In 2008 the school received a substantial legacy from Sid Bradbeer, a former member of staff who taught at the school from 1948 to 1981.
The income from this scheme is used, amongst other things, to cover up to 50 per cent of the residential and transport costs where students represent the school in regional or national finals of competitions.
