There was a surprisingly large turnout of Honiton seniors on Friday for their monthly medal competition, bearing in mind that medal play is not the most popular format since one bad hole can ruin an otherwise excellent score, writes Ann Desmoulins.

But Paul Ritchie, in Division One, proved equal to the task by coming first with an under-par net score of 68.

Steve Butcher – a perennial podium presence – was second on the same score. Chris Stroud followed with a 69 and fourth place was taken by Alan Pollock on 70.

In Division Two, seniors captain John Pawley seemed the likely winner with a net 72, but he was pipped at the post by an in-form Bob Cockett on 69.

John Vessey and Robert Canterbury were third and fourth respectively on 73. Steve Butcher and Neil Broadbent recorded twos at the second and Malcolm Matthews at the 12th. They each won 16 balls.
