There were 66 Honiton seniors in action on Friday for the annual 'Captain versus Vice Captain' matchplay competition in which pairs of players selected by the captain take on those chosen by the vice captain, writes Ann Desmoulins.
This year’s event was a light-hearted, friendly affair which was underlined by the fact that John Pawley, the seniors captain, who had recently been hors de combat because of a bad back, was confronted during his round by signs for ‘back rub’, ‘chiropractor’, ‘mobility buggies’ and even two paracetamol tablets ready to take on the eighth tee! It is believed that these nefarious tactics were deployed by vice-captain Steve Butcher.
As for the golf, the vice-captain’s team raced into an early lead of 5-1, but in a nail-biting finish, the captain’s team fought back to claim a narrow victory by nine matches to eight. All players were rewarded with a small bottle of wine.
There was only one two scored with Gerry Bolton getting it on the second hole to earn himself a whopping prize of 42 balls!
