Honiton survive late fight back to see off Hayle by single point

Honiton 20, Hayle 19 Honiton claimed a seventh home win of the league season and also chalked up a fourth win in five outings with a solid all-round display.

The closeness of the final score does not do justice to the Lacemen’s control of proceedings, although they did have to endure a nervous last few minutes!

With just two minutes remaining Honiton led 20-7. However, the visitors won a defensive scrum deep in their own 22 from where they charged up field to score an unconverted try.

From the restart Hayle once again powered their way through the home lines to score another try and this one they converted to move to within a single point of the Lacemen. However, the nails were not chewed for long by the home support for the final whistle brought relief all round!

It was a dominant second half display for all, but those last few minutes that had Honiton in control of proceedings. A Ben Webber penalty was all they had to show for their first half efforts during which time the visitors scored a converted try to lead 7-3 at half-time.

It was Webber who was heavily involved in the early second half Dan Barrett try that Weber the converted to put the Lacemen ahead. Barrett then played a big part in the approach play leading to an Ollie Rice try before Barrett himself went over in the corner.

Then came that dramatic end to the game, but the Lacemen held firm to deservedly bank the points.
