Honiton Town landed their first win of the season with a splendid 2-1 cup success at home to Chagford.

Town’s win sees them move into the 2nd Round of the Firewatch Devon Senior Cup.

Chaz Lane and Steve Rampaul scored the Town goals but it was the performance of goalkeeper Ben Case was the main reason behind the victory.

Case was simply outstanding and capped his Man of the Match performance with a second half penalty save.

That save was made when Town were 2-0 up and clearly gave the whole team a real lift. The visitors did get one past him in the closing stages but there was no way that Town, or Case, were going to be denied their day in the spotlight!

Town boss Gary Osbourne is very clear as to what got his side through in the tie: “The team spirit we are developing is the key. Everyone at Honiton Town Football Club is now clearly determined to be pulling in the same direction and that attitude and ethos is being taken onto the pitch by the team.”

Osbourne was also quick to point to the back three of Dave Richards, Marc Bowles and Ben Welsh, the latter called up from the Town second team to add some much needed experience to the defensive line.

Osbourne said “The back three were superb and Ben (Welsh) was a key player in that department. There’s no question that this cup win was so needed as it helps everybody involved grow in belief. I sincerely believe that we are now on the right track. I know I keep saying it, but it will not happen overnight, but, brick by brick, day by day, we’ll build a better and stronger, Honiton Town.”

It’s back to the league for Osbourne and his cup fighters on Saturday with a journey to Mid Devon to meet Uplowman.

The Town boss says: “I personally can’t wait for that. If we can take what we produced against Chagford up to Uplowman then I see no reason why we shouldn’t be coming home with something for our efforts.”
