Honiton Town extend unbeaten run as they pass Student examination.

Honiton Town extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 4-2 win at University.

Town’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric for, having been looking set to be cast adrift of the remainder of the Division Two side’s, just seven weeks ago with a record of played five and lost five, they are now closing in on a top eight berth!

Their latest success saw them power into a two goal lead, be pegged back to 2-2, but then ease their way to a 4-2 victory.

Joe Dixon’s double put them in charge before the Students got one back on the brink of half-time. The host’s levelled things up early in the second half, but the contest turned following some quick thinking by Darren Witt. When Town were awarded a free-kick, Witt asked the referee if he could take it quickly, and, as the Students were setting their defence, Witt delivered a superbly flighted effort up and over the gloves man and into the net. Darren Lampitt added the fourth inside the final five minutes. Mark Bowles claimed the Man of the Match award for a superb shift that saw him first lead the line up front, and then, when Ben Welch limped out of the action, Bowles slotted in seamlessly at centre back.

Town boss Gary Osbourne said: “We played very well and fully deserved to win. At 2-2 I was worried our hard work might end with only a share of the spoils but Darren’s quick-thinking was superb. The whole team are playing so well and it is quite clear that they are playing for each other. The spirit in the camp is excellent and I see no reason why this current run cannot be continued.”

Next up for upwardly mobile Town is Saturday’s home meeting with third in the table Westexe Rovers. Osbourne says: “It’s a tough one, but it will also provide us with a great marker as to how far we have come over the past six games to test ourselves against one of the leading teams in the Division.”
