Honiton Town’s grip on top spot in Fresha League Division One continued as they won 4-1 at Lympstone.

Lewis Couch opened the scoring, but the home side were level at the interval thanks to a well struck free-kick.

After the break Dan Broom, deputising for Darren Witt, made a fantastic goal line clearance to keep the game level. Jack Knight, who is having a fine season anchoring the midfield, scored twice and Matt Brown continued his fine run of scoring with the fourth.

Town boss Kev Blackwell said: “It was a game where we never really got going and to an extent suffered a hangover from the previous game in the cup. We seem to be creating a habit of just doing enough every game rather than forcing the issue. An under strength Lympstone gave us a real test, there will be harder matches to come and the lads need to raise their games as they may have a shock and a few ego’s may well end up feeling bruised.

“There are a lot of players in the reserves and lads returning from injury that are and will push for places. We have two teams, but one club and it is certainly not a closed shop as far as selection goes despite the victories and what people think.

“At Lympstone we were without skipper Darren Witt who was celebrating the birth of his new born son and the injured Wayne Baker who suffered a recurrence of his arm injury. However, the team was certainly good enough to put in a good showing, but again, I wonder if lads are comfortable in their shirts thinking they will keep their places because the team won.

“Saying all that, we are a quarter of the way through our league season, have played six out of the seven game so far away from home and are sitting top of the league having scored the most goals, so perhaps I shouldn’t be too hard on the lads.”

On Saturday Town entertain Clyst Valley (3pm).
