Honiton’s men had a good turnout for their latest meeting, despite the continued inclement weather, writes John Pawley.

Twenty-five braved the showers and cold wind and also welcomed a reduction in the number of winter greens for their Tuesday meeing. Scores were reasonable, but with conditions still not easy it ensured that some groups came in under the required totals, and penalties had to be paid.

The winners this week with 71 points, were Vic Wood, David Anderson and Alan Devenny.

In all 16 players entered the mixed American Foursomes competition and two groups played 18 holes.

The organisers welcomed the new lady captain, Jane Watts who presented the prizes. 35 points achieved by Peter Clarke and his wife Heather was enough for first prize with Jane Watts and Paul Ritchie second with 31 points.

Wednesday morning started bright and sunny, but it was deceptively cold for the ladies, and then the rain started!

However, undaunted, a dozen pairs played out a foursomes stableford competition. The eventual winners were Hilda Hoepelman and Cathy Uttley with 27 points.

Hot on their heels were captain Jane Watts and Heather Clarke (enjoying a good week) with 26 points beating Jackie Seager and Tricia Swindell on countback.

Alas the weather won again and that meant the cancellation of the seniors’ Friday competition.
