Seaton tennis starlet Emma Hurst Emma Hurst was crowned champion of the Under-16 and Under-18 titles at the Devon County Closed Championships held at Ivybridge.
The 15-year old had a straight forward run to the under-16s final not dropping a set, where she had to play against higher-rated and fellow Colyton Grammar, doubles’ partner, Lara Graney (Exeter). After a tightly fought and competitive match, Emma came through with a 6-3 6-2 win on the day.
In the under-18s competition, un-seeded Emma, knocked out the number two seed Mia Lowe 6-1, 6-0 before facing a tough game in the semi-finals where she had to come from a set down to bag a final berth.
She trailed Exmouth’s Emma Cooper 6-3 going into the second set but won that and then took the third set tie-break,10-5, giving her a place in the final and a win against Ivybridge’s Mae Dartnell 6-3 6-1.
Emma’s Coach Derek Blackmore said: “ I am delighted with the way Emma has performed throughout the summer and in the County finals today. It is great for a small club like Seaton Tennis Club to have juniors achieving at County level”.
