AFTER one of the most spectacular of Olympic opening ceremonies in Beijing at the weekend, local competitors have been trying to match it all with their performances.

Sidmouth's highly successful eventer Mary King has been doing well in equestrian events - full story in the Sidmouth Herald on Friday - and Imogen Cairns, whose parents Nigel and Janet Cairns live in Southleigh, has already starred in qualifying gymnastics (artistic) events.

Imogen has so far competed in the women's qualification subdivisions - on Sunday.

Reporting from China, a British Olympic Association spokesman said Imogen's individual scores in subdivision 2 when she finished fifth were: vault 14,850; uneven bars 13.475; beam 14.175 and floor 14.550 - a total of 57.050.

Honiton-born athlete Jo Pavey will be competing in the Women's 10000m event on Friday and in the 5000m event next Tuesday.
