THE 148s took centre stage at the MID DEVON ptp pony races as their event was held over 10 and a third furlongs, with them starting at the point to point start. They were all bunched up to the just past the fifth fence when they started to split up as the pace increased.

Jack Sparrow (Hugo Hunt) were always up with the leaders and he went ahead from just past the ditch, the main contenders breaking away along the top straight. As they swung down towards home Jack Sparrow maintained his lead pushed by Welsh visitor Chucka (Robert Williams) with local pony Flareon (Chloe Grove) and Ivory Girl (Henry Armstrong) also in with a chance.

As they rounded the final turn Jack Sparrow never looked like being headed and it was interesting to see how the ponies were puffing as well as the riders! As one of the crowd said it 'was like watching a proper bumper race' so well done to all the riders.

The 138s were a bit depleted due to the rearranged date and up front it was a fight again between Bronze Lawrence (Hannah Welch) and Talponciau Perfect Print ( Barnaby Treneer). Hannah got clear at the end to win by four lengths. There was a real battle going on for third and fourth between Furby (Holly Needham) and Oscar (Jordon Williams) but poor Holly suddenly found herself on the wrong side of the marker on the final bend and was disqualified.

The Mid Devon will be looking for more significant sponsorship if they are to hold the pony races next year due to the medical cover and insurance costs. If anyone can help please contact secretary Emma Dixon 01647 441164.
