Juniors fly flag for swimming club

Chard AND District Swimming Club squad of 12 and under swimmers competed in the final round of the Southern Junior League last weekend at Weston super Mare, where they achieved a commendable fifth place, against some stiff competition writes Hannah Pullinger.

Some great swims secured a total of 17 top three positions from: Elisha Hawkins 12, first in 50m breaststroke, Abi Bonning 11, first 50m freestyle, Leo Bonning 9, second 25m freestyle and backstroke, Jess Fowler 10, second 50m backstroke, Lewis Pearson 12, second 50m freestyle and third 50m butterfly, Michael Moulding 9, third in 25m breaststroke and 25m butterfly, Xanthe Dyer 10, third 50m butterfly, and Megan Herbert 10, third 50m breaststroke events.

Relay successes: second place was achieved by the 10yr girls’ freestyle team, and third places went to the 9yr boys’ medley team, 10yr boys’ freestyle team, 11yr boys’ freestyle and medley teams, and the 12yr girls medley team.

The Junior League Squad swimmers for this Gala were: boys: Leo Bonning, Ben Webb, Michael Moulding, Freddie Lodder, Oscar Rens, Joss Copeman, Simon Davis, Oliver Bright, Oliver Parry-Leyshon, Ryan Adair, Ben Greenslade, Liam Mathieson, Henry Taswell, Leo Kindred, Lewis Pearson, Tom Simpson

Girls: Eden McDonald, Leonie Housham, Jess McAuley, Imogen Waterhouse, Daisy Brett, Jess Fowler, Megan Herbert, Xanthe Dyer, Holly Dickinson, Jess Patch, Abi Bonning, India Woodhams, Helen Underwood, Somer Horsfield, Tamsin Edge, Elisha Hawkins, Ella Harvey and Grace Haskins.

Well done to all swimmers and thank you to all parents and helpers.

●Meanwhile Swimmers of the Month for May were - pictured above - : Hannah Pullinger 16, for achieving a new South West Regional Qualifying time in the 50m breaststroke setting a new Open club record and going on to win a silver medal in this event at the Regional Youth Championships, and Oliver Bilbie 14, for achieving his first South West Regional Qualifying time in the 100m backstroke.
