Ladies’ day at Axminster BC; Seaton’s top triple

Axminster bowls - The men did well to beat Ottery at home (32-25) in the Devon Over-60s League, writes David Harris.

Axminster fielded a winning rink of Les Monk, Frank Bridge, and David Harris (21-12). They lost away to Bradninch (26-42) with John Hill, David Harris, and Bob Sherborne giving away four shots on the penultimate end to lose narrowly (13-15) after leading throughout the match!

In the two away mixed friendlies, Axminster had their usual close encounter with Dunkeswell (Triples) before losing (69-76) with winning rinks of Margaret Brown, Frank Bridge, and Ann Clayton (27-10) and Les Monk, Joan Quick, and David Harris (15-13). They then lost at Seaton (77-41), unfortunately with no winning rinks!

●The club held its first ‘Ladies Day’ for many years last Saturday with the ‘Round-Robin’ being won by Joan Quick who won on the toss of a coin after tying with Barbara Mowatt!

The ladies were looked after by three male club bowlers who supplied tea and ‘friendship’ throughout! Ladies’ captain Pam Hunter agreed it was a very successful afternoon played in glorious sunshine and must be a permanent fixture.

•Seaton Bowls Club travelled to Bradninch for a friendly four rink match which Bradninch won 87 to Seaton’s 62, writes Linda Stone.

Seaton’s top rink was T Hurley-Smith, S Warrick, J Bellamy and A Mayhew.

Five triples were played at home to Tiverton Borough. It was a close-fought match which ended with a win for Seaton 98-80. Top triple was R Sykes, S Fewtrell and J Miles. They won 27-9.

The Over-60s men’s A team played at home on Wednesday against Tiverton West End and, after a close-fought match, Tiverton only just beat Seaton 33-32. Seaton’s top triple was I Steer, R Rowley and A Wood. The B team played away at Bradninch and had a resounding win, gaining all eight points.

Chardstock ladies came to Seaton on Thursday to play a re-arranged match from April. Unfortunately, the weather closed in and, with a cold wind blowing and rain, the match was abandoned after 11 ends. Seaton Men went to Chardstock and managed to complete their match, Chardstock just beating Seaton.

The week ended with a four mixed triples match against Axminster at Seaton. It was an extremely enjoyable game which Seaton won 79 to 41. Top triple was T Hurley-Smith, K Russell and S Fewtrell.
