Leanne nets university scholarship

Leanne Debenham, 17, from Honiton has won a sports scholarship to East London University.

Leanne Debenham, 17, from Honiton has won a sports scholarship to East London University.Leanne, who has played badminton for Devon at U16/17 level, for Devon 3rds and is the youngest girl to be in the Devon 1sts squad, travels to tournaments all over the country and her training regime would make most teenagers blanch.She helps out at Honiton Badminton Club, where first Harry Humphries then Steve Pritchard were her coaches, on Fridays and Mondays. She travels to get the best coaching available and on Saturdays she gets up early for a 6.30am bus from Exeter to Queens, Crediton, and then catches the train home. Leanne is a pupil at Woodroffe School, Lyme Regis which has a badminton specialism.She will be studying physiotherapy at university with a view to becoming a sports physiotherapist. Leanne had been hoping to get to Loughborough where her brother is studying, but the course has been discontinued there. East London University advised her to apply for a sports scholarship after receiving her original application. She had to send in a 500-word essay on why she deserved it, showing her commitment to sport, and include a portfolio including testimonials from coaches and showing her results so far. The scholarship could be worth up to £1,000 in the first year.
