Local drivers impress at Wiscombe Park meeting

Drivers from Devon enjoyed success at Wiscombe Park this weekend in the final regional championship meeting of the season at the venue with two rounds of the Tillicoultry Quarries Wiscombe Park Hill Climb Championship, writes Geoffrey Pickett.

The entry list for the two-day meeting encompassed classes for road-going and modified saloon and sports cars as well single-seater racing cars.

Exeter gold professional Jonathan Langmead took his Lotus Elise 111S to a brace of victories in the Road-Going Series Production class for cars with engines between 1400cc and 1800cc, setting a best climb of 32.77 seconds.

Ottery St Mary motor technician James Hudson shadowed the progress of the sports car driver in his rapid Volkswagen Golf, claiming a second place in the Saturday meeting and a third the following day when Neil Catling snatched the runner-up slot with his Elise.

The large capacity division of the Road-Going categories (over 2600cc) saw two podium finishes for Exeter garage proprietor Steve Clarke. The Subaru Impreza driver posted his quickest climb of 42.95 seconds on the Saturday to claim the victory, but was unable to replicate his pace the following day and had to give best to another Subaru, driven by Jack Ellis and the Mitsubishi Evo 6RS of Simon Neve, who took the premier award in the class by a mere five hundredths of a second. Exeter dairy farmer Martyn Glover took a fourth place aboard his Mitsubishi Evo 4RS.

Exeter builder John Tandy claimed two wins in the Modified Series Production Car class at the wheel of his MG Midget setting a best time of 46.93 seconds on the second day of the meeting when track conditions were considered to be better than on the Saturday.

This fact was of no benefit to Feniton driver Martyn Pike as he was only competing on the Saturday with his BDA powered Ford Escort Mk1, but it had little effect on the architect technician as he romped to the win in the 1400cc to 1800cc split of the Modified Series Production car category on a time of 41.97 seconds. Exeter father and son duo David and Jan Yeo had a bittersweet weekend with Jan taking two wins across the weekend with his father following him home in the Saturday event, but problems the following day meant only one competitive time was recorded with the Westfield but a climb of 43.49 seconds was achieved by Jan to gain him his second win.

Crediton engineer Kevin Frost campaigned his self-designed and constructed KMD 004 in the 1600cc to 2000cc racing car class. On the first day of the meeting, Frost had to give best to the Pilbeam MP82 of Andrew Dinner but twenty-four hours later took a comfortable class win ahead of the Van Diemen RF02 of Andy Stoddart having set a 41.04 second time.

This weekend (September 8 and 9) sees the finale of the season at the East Devon track with the MG Car Club in action on Saturday staging the final round of the Wiscombe Park Championship as well bringing many interesting cars of their own marque and others to the hill.

An array of sports and saloon cars make up an extensive entry list. The following day the National Hill Climb Association take over the organisers reigns for a day of rapid motorcycling both on two and three wheels. Admission is £10 for each day while accompanied children are admitted free.
