Local swimmers star at Pyramid pool gala

Chard & District Swimming Club competed in the Exeter Open Meet on November 29 at the Pyramids Pool, Exeter, writes Steph Hallam.

It was another successful weekend with the club winning the Top Visiting Club Trophy for the third time this year at a meet, hosted by Exeter City Swimming Club.

Jake Hallam, 13, obtained three South West Regional Qualifying times, (SWRQT) during the day in the 100m breaststroke: 1 -18-13, 200m breaststroke: 2-50-52, also improving his personal best in the 100m butterfly: 1-06-33. Jake narrowly missed out on the 100m backstroke time by just 0.27 of a second. He achieved five firsts in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke, 100m individual medley and a second in the 100m backstroke event.

Meanwhile, Hannah Pullinger, 13, achieved a SWRQT in the 100m freestyle 1-03-94. She also obtained two South West Counties consideration times (SWCCT) in the 200m freestyle: 2-21-49 and 100m breaststroke 1-25-06 for the very first time with three firsts in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, with a second in the 200m freestyle.

Luke van den Barselaar, 14, achieved two SWRQT's in the 100m backstroke: 1-09-37 and 200m backstroke with a personal best time of 2-30-68. He also secured first in the 200m individual medley and was second in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke with a third in the 100m freestyle.

Jack Fish, 16, also gained two SWCCT in the 200m freestyle: 2-07-13 (first place) and 50 freestyle: 26.74 ( second place). He also achieved second in the 50m butterfly and two thirds in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

Other medallists were : Charlie Kendall, 9, (2nd) 50m backstroke, (3rd) 50m breaststroke. Ella Harvey, 9, (3rd) 50m backstroke. Lewis Pearson, 10, (3rd) 200m freestyle. Susan Ross, 10, (3rd) 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly. Oliver Bilble, 11, (1st) 50m freestyle and 200m backstroke. Jamie Pullinger, 11, (1st) 200m individual medley, (2nd) 50m freestyle and 200m backstroke (3rd) 50m butterfly. Elsie Emery, 11, (1st) 200m freestyle. (3rd) 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley.

Abigail Dare, 12, (1st) 50m backstroke, 100m Breaststroke and 200m individual medley, (2nd) 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke, and 200m backstroke. Ben Fowler, 13, (2nd) 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly, (3rd) 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley. Laura Coombs, 14, (2nd) 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly. James Rutherford, 15, (3rd) 200m individual medley and Steph Hallam, 16, (3rd) 50m backstroke.

Other swimmers taking part were: Jade Hawkins, Lauren Harrison, Jenna Emery, Iain Ross, Beckie Rutherford, Jake Harvey and Mollie Simpson, who all performed well, many obtaining personal bests throughout the day.
