Archant

The Longhurst Cup was competed for by 72 seniors in a three-ball better ball one score to count format, writes Ann Desmoulins.

The cup was given in 1995 by Gordon Longhurst with the proviso that a donation was made to the Save the Children Fund each year on the day of the competition. This year the members of the seniors’ section donated £95 to go to the charity.

Scores were high and the winning team of Dave Maggs, Peter Blake and Garth Millard registered an excellent 49 points. Bob Underwood and Rod Armitage finished second with 47. Third was determined by countback with Steve Butcher, Tom Stanton and Ashley Murray edging John Pawley, Duncan Hepburn and Tony Proudfoot into fourth after both finished on 46.

There were five twos, each winning 10 balls; Dave Maggs, John Lock and Tom Tunnicliffe on the second, Chris Street on the fourth and Mike Watts on the 12th.

Two seniors’ matches were contested in the past week, an excellent 4-2 victory and Teignmouth on Tuesday and an equally excellent 4-2 victory at Tiverton on Thursday. Well done, to both teams.
