Following the success of Lyme Regis Gig Club’s Regatta, the gig racing circus moved down the coast to Paignton.
It proved to be another good event for the Lyme Regis crews with three of them finishing in top two berths in their respective races.
Not all of the Lyme A crew were available for the trip to Paignton and so this meant promotion for some of the club’s B and C crews.
The club sent Black Ven as their boat for the Regatta.
The ladies’ and men’s A races both saw ninth finishes for the Lyme crews and in the B race the men finished 10th in their event and the ladies’, 12th, in theirs.
In the C and the vet’s races the Lyme crew certainly made their presence felt.
The men’s C crew were involved in a thrilling sprint finish and crossed the line second. However, post-race it was declared that first over then line was a composite crew and so Lyme were awarded the race!
The ladies C race saw the Lyme girl’s power their way from the start line to hold a place in the thick of the leading pack.
They kept the pace really well and crossed the line second behind winning crew from Brixham aboard Pegasus.
In the ladies’ vets race there was a respectable seventh place for the Lyme crew.
In the men’s vet race there was a terrific battle between the Brixham crew aboard Pegasus and the Lyme crew in Black Ven.
The pair were neck-and-neck with a third boat throughout and, on the final leg, with just 30-metre to go to the line it was Pegasus which, by the merest of inches, crossed second with Black Venn third.
However, once again the winning boat was declared to have been a composite crew and that left Brixham moved to first and the Lyme crew to second!
The Lyme Club are now in the midst of a training session, preparing for the forthcoming County Championships at Newquay in September.
Thanks to all at the Paignton club for making the day a very enjoyable one.
