Bottles were opened and glasses ready, but the champagne has gone back in the fridge for one more week at Lyme Regis Football Club.
Needing just a point against Chard Town Reserves to secure the Premier Division East title in the Joma Devon and Exeter League last weekend, Lyme were cruising at 3-0, thanks to first-half goals from Rob Fellingham, Brad Rowe and Tom Bastin.
Celebrations were then put on hold by match referee Roger Mills, who decided the torrential rain had made the pitch at Davey Fort unplayable and the game was abandoned.
League officials have moved quickly to reschedule the fixture for this weekend and the maths remain the same; a win, or draw, for Lyme Regis will be enough see them overtake Feniton at the top and bag the league title by the narrowest of margins.
