Maddocks stars as Colyton bag vital win.

COLYTON recorded an invaluable 2-0 win over Broadclyst on Saturday to boost their chances of avoiding the drop from Division Two of the Fresha league.

With both Richard Tratt and Wayne Waddon missing, manager Keith Somers had little choice but to put skipper Paul Millman into central defence instead of his usual midfield role.

Millman along with Gary May were imperious all afternoon restricting the Broadclyst attack to a couple of long range efforts.

Midfield duo Jason Potter and Ed Busby protected the back four, allowing George Moore a free role to pull the Colyton strings.

This was no more evident than when Moore played a defence splitting ball to lone striker Callum Somers to outpace the Clyst backline and selflessly draw the goalie before squaring to left winger Nathan Maddocks who rolled the ball into an empty net.

Somers, who occupied the Broadclyst rearguard tirelessly, could have had a hat-trick before the break. However the striker was denied by three outstanding saves by keeper Paul White who was far and away the Broadclyst star player on the day.

Thirty five minutes in, Moore again made a slide rule pass to Ed Busby who coolly slotted into the bottom corner from twenty five yards. The second goal knocked the stuffing out of the visitors as Colyton took total control.

The second period saw the Tanners test White time and again, but he refused to be breached, the most notable was tipping over a rasping drive from replacement and newly appointed assistant manager Simon McClellan.

The man of the match award chosen by Gordon Parsons went to Nathan Maddocks, working the full back for ninety minutes, he crowned a fine performance with the first goal.

Boss Somers said: “This was a very good all round team performance and a much needed three points. Hopefully this will spur the team on for the run in as we have work still to do to ensure a satisfactory end to the season.”
