The penultimate Sunday of October saw a Madeira men’s team of two rinks make the short trip across to Budleigh, writes Jean Healey.

David Macaulay’s team of himself, Graham Ellis, Chris Price and John Bellamy were pleased to win 23-8, but this was offset by the other rink losing 34-9 and so leaving the hosts as 10 shot winners.

There was a visit of a mixed team from Newton Abbott and it produced a fairly even game with Madeira ultimately taking the match honours to the tune of a 70-63 final score.

George Perrin with Josie Glaister, Brian Poulter, and Sandie Worcester were trailing 18-9 on the 17th end, but then scored a three and a six to eventually catch up and overhaul their opponents to win 20-18.

October 23 saw two rinks of ladies travel to Budleigh where they recorded a fine 43-26 success with both rinks having almost equal shot difference.

Deirdre Norman’s team managed a six on the 10th end and Sandie Cox’s team a five on the 16th end. What a difference a high count makes!

The men’s Over-60s County Trophy match saw them face Budleigh and it proved most successful for Madeira who won both rinks in Exmouth and both at Budleigh to seal an overall 22 shot success.

The ladies’ representative Foxlands League matches are always keenly fought and their latest outing was against Kingsley from North Devon – a long trip for the two away teams!

Joy Pemberthy’s team won 27-13 away, an excellent result, and the two home teams also won their games.

Catherine King, Jan Roberts, Janet Grundy, Nicky Fiddimore were well ahead, 20-5 after 12 ends, but the opposition gradually picked up to a final score 22-17.

Sue Harriott, Penny Preece, Carol Hyett and Deirdre Norman, were also well ahead 20-10 with the opposition fighting back, but managed to retain the lead to finish as 24-16 winners. Well done, all players, for a valuable eight points banked.

Finally, a friendly of three ladies’ triples journeyed to Sidmouth where only one of the rinks was a winning one – that being the rink of Jean Rainton, Sue Long and Janet Grundy, who won 21-16. Sadly, that was not part of an overall winning score as Sidmouth took the honours, 52-35.
