Axe Cliff seniors were delighted to once again get their buggies out onto the course for their latest action, the monthly stableford.

After the golf was finished, players headed for the warmth of the clubhouse to see seniors captain Dave Bruce make a special presentation to his choice of Clubman of the Year for 2017.

The award went to the very deserving Mick Swann, who does lots of work for the club in general and particularly for the senior section.

As Dave [Bruce] says: “His [Mick Swann’s] golf, on occasions, is not bad either, winning the joint visitors’ Open Championship at Fingle Glen with our secretary, Mike Tomes.

“Mick is not only our minute man extraordinaire for all our committee meetings, but also acts as assistant secretary and organiser-in-chief of our popular roll-up meetings during the week, an event that has grown tremendously and now has the ladies taking part when they can.

“A note of what everyone says at the committee meetings usually gets a mention and it can take a day to read them properly!

“Everyone’s score is kept and recorded in his amazing ‘roll-up’ records with an overall champion being awarded at the end of the year.

“He is the only one who can stand on his feet and speak longer than the seniors captain can do – and that is no mean feat!”

Dave concluded: “Mick is also an ardent supporter for our musical social events, using his talents to the fore.”

In playing news, the February stableford, now to be a regular qualifier, was well supported with some 35 taking part and was a very close-fought contest with four players all returning scores of 34 points and therefore taking places five to two.

They were: Dave Weston, fifth, Brian Thompson, fourth, Nigel Garwood, third and Bill Polley, second.

However, out on his own, was single handicapper Stuart Mackie with an amazing score of 35 points that could have been 40 if the greens had been kinder to him!

He just missed getting a two on three holes, but four twos were recorded from Adrian Bishop, Alan Morgan, Nigel Garwood and Robbie Robinson.
