Millwey Rise were winners by the odd goal in five when they entertained Winkleigh in a Fresha League encounter, writes Dick Sturch.

The team made a slick start and, within the first 15 minutes, were two up courtesy of some excellent team work and their prolific front man Levi Hoole. He scored his first running onto a through-ball and beating the keeper with a powerful low strike. For the second he soared high above the defenders to place a well directed header into the net. It seemed at this point Millwey felt they had done enough which resulted in them losing control of the midfield to some skilful and determined play from their opponents who scored twice to level the game before half-time.

This could have been even more, but for some vital interceptions by Stuart King in the middle of the home side’s defence. The nearest Millwey got to scoring was a shot from Shane Featherstone that grazed the upright.

The second half saw chances at both ends in a thoroughly entertaining encounter and it was left to Hoole to complete his hat-trick in the 60th minute to give Millwey the vital winner and maintain their undefeated run. There is no doubt that Winkleigh are the strongest side to visit Cloakham Lawns so far this season and certainly tested the home team’s resolve. It was to Millwey’s credit, especially the defence led by Stuart King, and goalkeeper Nathan Hoole’s safe hands, that they came through with their fine start to the season intact.

Millwey Reserves, though beaten 2-0 at Lapford, were much improved from the previous outing. Ray Coombes in centre midfield and newcomer Chris Lusty in defence put in the stand-out shifts.

This Saturday (October 3) the first team travel to Royal Oak in the Football Express Cup. The Reserves host Elmore Reserves Geary Cup (2.30pm).
