With some challenging pin positions it required some good golf to break par in the Lyme Regis May medal, writes Richard Jackman.

The top three in Division One did as Geoff Moss started off his round in sparkling form, after five holes, his 12 handicap was being severely threatened as he was two under gross.

In the end his nett 68 was the best score of the day as he won. Craig McGown also started very well with a smattering of birdies including one on the stroke index one and had to settle for second place with nett 69 while scratch handicapper Scott Love rallied well at the end to come in with an under par 70.

Martin Dixon gritted his teeth and held his nerve as he recorded a superb nett two under par 69 to clinch top spot, the only player to better par in Division Two.

Owen Bosence and Simon Leech had a fierce battle for second place, but Owen’s better back nine score just took silver.

Lyme seniors played their May medal in similarly testing conditions with Division One belonging to Robert Laverton as his three nett birdies on the front nine, and steady play secured the best score of the day with 39 points. John Coley birdied two of the par fives in each nine scoring a brilliant 37 points for second while Geoff Richmond had a consistent round to record third with 36 points.

Division Two was very competitive as David Hay steadied himself for two excellent halves and won with 38 points.

Andrew Thomas had a good front nine which ensured he broke nett par to take second spot from Alan Woodbridge who finished strongly and scored 36 points.

Lyme Regis hosted the Dorset Ladies Seniors’ championship ladies and several members took part, and the ladies also hosted an open competition two days’ later, both were very well supported as everyone enjoyed a testing course in excellent conditions.
