Former Exeter City left-back Dean Moxey was part of a Torquay United team that suffered the cruellest defeat possible in the National League Play-Off Final.
Played in front of a passionate crowd at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate, Moxey and the Gulls made a decent start, only to be denied an opening goal by a controversial refereeing decision ruling out a Kyle Cameron header.
Hartlepool then grabbed the lead before half-time but Torquay laid siege on their North-East opponents in the second period.
Cameron had another goal chalked off and Moxey was substituted five minutes before the end. The game was deep into injury-time, when, incredibly, Torquay goalkeeper Lucas Covolan came forward for a set-piece to score an astonishing equaliser.
Two exhausted sides battled through extra-time and on to penalties. The first four spot-kicks were missed before Matt Buse hit the bar to hand Hartlepool a 5-4 win and a place in the Football League.
