Honiton GC has a new captain - Tim Avery - who took over his duties formally at a dinner on Thursday, where president Anne Davies was presented with a silver salver for her sterling work.

He was presented to the club on Sunday at the Captain's drive-in. Dimond has been vice captain for a year and he has been a club stalwart from the Sunday games, to the B teams he has captained and to the help he has given to the junior section, resulting in enabling his son Jason to achieve Professional status.

This year Tim's replacement as vice captain is Paul Dimond and a mighty duo they already make.

A four ball better ball game with two scores to count. The eventual winners were Paul Coates, Terry Dimond, Andy Ford and Paul Hill who romped home with a massive 84pts. Wooley Richie, Tony Denne, Alan Seager and Jason Gosling were a valiant second with 79pts ahead of Mark Gillard, James Drew, Rob Willey and Dan Noar on countback. At the actual drive in, Tim was joined by new Ladies’ Captain Sue Richie, Seniors’ Captain Bill Nicholls and Junior Captain Ollie Cave, all of whom managed to overcome the stress of getting the ball on the fairway in very few shots (Ollie taking just one mighty drive).

Avery took a mere three with Mike Godfrey winning the whisky for having the marker nearest to where the ball arrested. The captain’s charity for the year is Hospiscare and members wish him well in his duties after a very bright start.

?This week’s Tuesday Mixed saw 20 members playfor the Mixed Greensomes Stableford Goblets, drawn for partners. The competition was played over 14 holes. The best score of the day and winning the Goblets for February with 29pts were Ro Poole and Alan Seager. Second, with 27pts, were Gerda Brown and Jason Gosling. Thidd place went to the new lady Captain Sue Ritchie and Mike Watts - 26pts.The Mixed Fours Golfer of the Year Cup for 2010 was won by Gerda Brown. The cup was presented to Gerda by Sue Richie.

?In spite of the mist and rain, 27 ladies braved the elements on Wednesday and headed out for a shot-gun start 14-hole competition. Teams of three played a Stableford, two scores to count, fun game which began in high spirits, and, as the weather improved, so did the scoring. First, with an excellent score of 61 points were Lesley Oxenham, Sharon Dacre and Linda Northover. Second place, with another good score of 59 points, were Chris Pearce, Jan Lloyd and Elizabeth Davies.

Trisha Swindell, Anne Davies and Gill Johns made third place with a very respectable 56 points.

? By way of light relief it was a Texas Scramble competition for the Seniors this week. Unusually, it was played in pairs and also unusually, in good weather. First out of the traps were the Super Mario boys on their Karts, Bob Bilyard and Mike Kent. Speeding round the course they were first in posting an impressive score of 58 with a strong performance over the later holes.

Alas it was not enough as the brothers Stroud struck with a 56. They are not really brothers but Mike and Don complemented each other perfectly in what could be the start of a useful relationship.

Unlucky to be pipped on countback, Peter Shepherd and Ashley Murray also recorded a 56 for second place. Mr Consistent Bob Cleal, partnered by former Bar Steward, Peter Blake were third with 56.5, a whisker ahead of Vic Wood and Trevor Bradley and Keith Thomas and Bob Underwood both on 57.
