Honiton RFC 1st XV notched up their third win of the season to remain unbeaten for this season and maybe the strict fitness regime is paying dividends as, this week, they handed out a good old fashioned pasting to Buckfastleigh, winning by 78-3.

Honiton are very much in a state of rebuilding following the retirement of lots of old heads and the first team now boast a lot of youngsters who are beginning to make the grade. They more than make up for their inexperience with commitment and fitness. There are of course some 'old stagers' amongst the side, which helps to curb over exuberance, but Honiton still have a long way to go to being good, given the spluttered win of last week against much stiffer opposition.

However, for this week, everything was right, no wind, a nice sunny day, ideal conditions for rugby and, in a nutshell, Honiton clicked and played well against a side who, to be fair, were pretty poor.

Nevertheless, to score 14 tries takes some doing and, if the kicking had been up to par, the score could have been in the 90s.

Honiton had it won by half time and, in the second period, they cut loose to ram their advantage home. There was a feast of tries for the backs which was good and shows Honiton are throwing the ball about.

Chris Delarge led the way getting five tries, speed merchant Dobson, on the wing, got another four and Stevie Nex got a brace.

Chris Sampson was the other back to score and, along with flanker Dean Norman and old war horse Brendon Findlay, the tally was 14 in all.

The only glitch was the lack of goal kicking and someone must step up to the plate to be the resident kicker. Ten goals were missed and in closer encounters, goals and penalties are crucial.

Sampson won the 'yards carried' award and his breaks set up several of the scores for his fellow backs, which marks a welcome return to form for him as he's been out of sorts in the pre-season build up. Jake Steggal continues to impress and he was the pick of the Honiton players with good carries, accurate line-out throwing and several strikes against the heads.

All in all it was a good all round performance with Honiton "on song", but let's not get too carried away.

The opposition were not up to much and there will be much sterner test ahead.

If this Saturday's match is a rearranged fixture away to South Molton, it will be tough test for coach Bralsford's new young side.
