The sport of Triathlon is booming in this country, and it has prompted the formation of a new Tri club in the area, the N1 Tri Club, to enable existing and aspiring triathletes to train together.

The variety of training from the three disciplines of swimming, cycling and running means that boredom seldom sets in.

Triathlon races are exciting events as they can involve open water wet suit swimming, top of the line racing bikes and a barrage of colourful racing gear.

Interestingly, they always seem to be staged in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. Races range from the "Iron man distance' (2.3 mile swim, 112 miles cycling and a full marathon run) to short course events, which may be a 400 metre pool swim, 10 mile bike and a two mile run.

Most who give an event a try will start on mountain bike, and may swim breast stroke, but soon will progress to greater things as the bug bites them.

The N1 Tri Club now has regular swim and cycling training sessions in place and the team had its first race outing at the recent Crewkerne Triathlon, registering a fourth overall in the race, but also first and second in the 20-29 age group, a second place in the super-vet category and a fifth position in the 30 - 39 age group. Take a bow Tom and Liz Elliott, Luke Reed and Kevin Wood.

Tom Barber achieved 'Iron Man' status after a great performance in the recent event in Nice, in France. Tom Elliott also notched up a podium finish in the open category at Wareham at the weekend, taking third place overall.
