The Axe Cliff Three Club Shield is an annual event where all choose two clubs and a putter for the whole round, writes Dave Bruce.

Dave Weston clearly showed he plays better with only three to choose from as he won with an amazing 37 points!

Nigel Garwood, despite his imposed lower handicap, somehow managed second spot with 33 points and John Mant was close on his heels with 32.

The only two came from 80-year-old Sid Pember. Mind you, Sid is also likely to do better having already bagged a hole-in-one this year which also saw him land a Rolex watch worth some £275, which anyone can claim if they get a hole-in-one in an official club competition. You are never too old to take up golf!

Sid has prompted the seniors to honour any future

hole-in-one’s with a litre bottle of good whisky and a club trophy.

It seems an odd tradition where the event usually ends in the achiever having to buy everyone in the clubhouse a drink which Sid did!

The men’s section saw a good number take part in the July Medal meeting.

It produced a great battle between Stuart Mackie and Ian Burraston in Division One, with Stuart just taking the honours, on countback, after both scored nett 70s.

There was a little more daylight in Division Two with Peter Petheridge talking first spot with a fine nett 69.

Simon Matthews came second with a good nett 72 and had the only card with a two on it.

The ladies began their week with the last of their Sheelah Creasy matches, against Fingle Glen.

They competed well, but lost overall by five-and-a-half to two.

After all this fine weather, it had to change last Wednesday when it quickly changed from a drizzle to heavy rain as the round went on in their County Prize Stableford competition.

Amazingly the majority of the field finished, all soaked to the skin, and wished they had been better prepared but, at least, the course enjoyed the much needed rain!

However, there were some good scores despite the conditions and just two points separated the first three. Stella Thompson (33, was first with Paula Heasman (32) second and Sandra Walker (31), third.
