Pember pipped by a wet Wake in Axe Cliff seniors’ January Medal competition.

For the Axe Cliff seniors’ January Medal the conditions were mainly dry, writes Janet Dack.

However, the elements did throw up squally rain and heavier rain came in to catch the final three amongst whom was the eventual winner.

Sid Pember (20) had been leading with an excellent 69 nett before a wet Geoff Wake (14) pipped him at the post with the same score, but winning on countback.

In third place, two shots behind with a 71 nett was Peter Knighting (16).

Three twos were recorded by Pember, Knighting and Tony Strong.

The fifth round of the Seniors Winter League was played and, despite an icy start and tricky conditions, the scoring was remarkably good with Terry Jessup and David Lacey amassing 39 points to win.

Second place went to Gilbert Cox and Alan Vincent with 37 points and third to Chris Walker and Bob Berry with 34 points.

There were three twos from Phil Wilkins, Rob Grove and once again Sid Pember.

In the ladies’ section the winning pairing for the Australian Spoons competition, played last Wednesday on a glorious morning (so lovely to get 18 holes in without any rain!), were Lesley Crawford and Janet Dack.
