One hundred and twenty eight Devon golf club captains arrived at Saunton to celebrate their 75th year anniversary with a special individual Stableford event, writes Andy Wagner.

Only the Liverpool and London Past Captains Associations have been in existence longer than Devon and, to mark the occasion, Dr Nayyar Naqvi OBE past captain Liverpool Captains and past captain of Wigan Golf Club was invited to address the members after diner as the guest speaker.

Dr Naqvi is also a consultant cardiologist with a love of Shakespeare and poetry and his address, a mix of comedy interspersed with quotations and golf was well received.

As for the golf, despite near perfect weather conditions, Saunton's East and West courses provided very stiff tests with the rough areas reflecting the recent ideal conditions for growth.

However, while all others paid the price for missed fairways, Saunton's Brian Warren rose to the occasion to finish six strokes clear of the field on the Championship East course with a superb 43pts.

A real indication of the test was the winning score of 34pts on the West course by Max Pipe of Honiton.
