A double treat is in store this bank holiday weekend for point-to-point racing enthusiasts when The Modbury Harriers stage their meeting at Flete Park on Saturday (May 5) and then the Stevenstone meeting at Vauterhill, takes place on Monday (May 7), writes Donna Harris.

First up is the Flete Park event with pony racing heading up the action at 1pm followed by their seven race card starting at 2pm, which includes the Totnes & Bridgetown-sponsored four-mile Ladies’ Open race.

Ottery St Mary-based trainer Ed Walker holds an entry with Miss Gotaway; she is the highest rated and has clocked up wins this season so far at Buckfastleigh and Bishops Court.

Another to consider is Blazing Buck for trainer Gareth Moore, a winner of this race two seasons ago could make the trip for another steal of this race. Ed Walker also has a good chance of taking the Wurzel Weddings-sponsored restricted race with Danseur du Large, who could bounce back from an unlucky unseat when racing at Larkhill recently. Ann Maries Reject won her maiden race at Bishops Court and could well be a main contender.

The open maiden race has Just Another Vodka entered, who could improve on his third here at the last meeting.

The members race has Hunter Chase winner Full Trottle entered, although connections could run him at Cheltenham Friday evening, which could leave Beat The Tide to follow up on his mixed open win at Lockinge last month.

The novice riders race has attracted good entries with William Money for Connor Brace, The Dapper Fox for Jack Veasey, Miss Gotaway for Abbie Hughes along with Heaney who would be a popular winner for local jockey Millie Wonnacott.

Meteorite stands out in the open maiden for four- to six-year-olds, having run well in fourth Barbury. Finally the confined race could go the way of Ambitious Pursuit for Pippa Glanville having run well here two weeks ago, although they could have The Dapper Fox and Honest Deed snapping at his heels.

This is a popular track for families to enjoy a picnic day at the races in this stunning parkland setting. The course has a country show feel about it with many trade stands, along with bar, bookies and hot and cold refreshments.

Entrance to the course is £10 per person to a maximum of £30 per car. Children under 16 free and dogs on leads welcome. Postcode PL21 9 NX.

Bank holiday Monday’s meeting is held at Vauterhill, High Bickington where there are also seven races on offer with a start time of 2pm.

A total of 90 entries have been received. The Kivells-sponsored Mixed Open race will be the feature race of the day which has prolific winning mare Whenharrymetsally entered. She is a dual track winner here and could make it into the winners’ enclosure again for the Keith Cumings team. Fishy Story from the Stuart Sampson yard is another mare with a track win here. She is entered in the mixed open and the confined race, although won last weekend by an impressive 40 lengths, this event may come too soon. In the opening members race Horwood Lad could follow up on his win at Stafford Cross last weekend with Cinevator looking to follow up on his two wins of this race in the past two years.

The restricted race holds an entry from Ballybruff, who has been placed runner-up on all three runs this season and deserves a win soon, with Ann Maries Reject looking a progressive type and should be in the mix.

In the Penbode Equine-sponsored intermediate race, Wind Tor looks to be likely favourite, already on a hat-trick this season for the in-form Ed Walker team. Mountain Las, Rumour Has It and Gerties Gartor are suggestions in the mares open race having all gone close recently. Finally up is the open maiden with entries Heaven’s Choice, Mountain Las and Pancrace all having already shown ability.

Entrance to the course is £10 per car and driver £20 car driver and passenger £30 car load. Under 16s free. The course is located at High Bickington, signpost off A377, A3124 and B3217, postcode EX37 9BT.
