HONITON - THE men played one of those quirky games that called a 'One, Two, Three' when, organised into teams of three, players were required to record one score out of three on the first six holes, two on the second six and all three on the last six, writes Andy Wagner.

If only it had an easy reference name like a Stableford, which is named after the creator Mr Stableford. Now could be the right time to get my own name down for posterity by calling the game a 'Wagner'? No? Thought not.

However, the game is quite easy to record unless you start on the second starting tee at our club which is hole 11 where you are straight into a two scores to count situation. Scoring the cards from there took a special kind of dedication, but checking them must have been a nightmare. Step forward that club stalwart and dedicated past B Team Captain Tim Avery. Tim is current vice captain, so, when his own term of office starts next year he can delegate the chore to his own vice (you have been warned). But, for now, the cards were Tim's responsibility and what a job he did.Though the scoring wasn't that tight in the end, third and fourth were divided by count back.

Winners with 77pts were G Filtness, B Bilyard and M Kent. Second were J Drew, D Noar and M Gillard 74pts with M Blackmore, S Selway and S Branch taking third with 69pts.

Mention must be made of Bob Bilyard's two on the par four eighth. The poor man spent five minutes looking round the green for his ball before partner Mike Kent had the foresight to look in the hole! What would have happened if he had given it up I wonder?

At long last members were able to play for the Monthly Goblets in the drawn Mixed Foursomes competition. Due to the weather, they have not been played for since January. The winners this week, with 40pts, were Avril Shepherd and Stan Squire.

This is the third week Stan has won the Tuesday Mixed with various lady members and formats, even after a recent handicap reduction.

In second place, and chasing Stan and Avril until the last few holes, were their playing partners Barbara Eastwood and John Dickinson with 37 pts. Third placed were Gerda Brown and Robert Hendrick with 36pts.

AXE CLIFF - It was third time unlucky for the Seniors in their latest inter-club match, writes Janet Dack Having won the first two they suffered a reversal last week losing at home to Honiton by four and a half v two and a half. Winners for Axe Cliff were Morrison Brown/John W White and Chris Walker/Hugh Willis. The half point was gained by captain, Gilbert Cox and John Mant.

On Friday, a field of 35 members played in the annual charity Stableford in aid of a prostate cancer charity. In excellent conditions, four players bettered par and the winner with 40 points was Phil Christmas (26). In second place, on 39, was Malcolm Glass (19).

Two players amassed 37 and third place, on countback, went to Brian Wilkes (12) edging out Gilbert Cox (18). As a result of this win Christmas qualifies for the regional final in September at Came Down.

l The Ladies' welcomed the Wrangaton players for the return match in the league. The result was the reverse of the previous meeting with the home team winning 4-2. Winners for Axe Cliff were Sandra Walker, Barbara Cummings, Chris Drew and Mary Gipps On Wednesday the Centenary Cup was played, the winner, with a net 74, was Sandra Walker.

l Unfortunately the men's competition on Sunday was abandoned due to fog.
