Honiton has a long tradition of hosting the RAFA Charity Open and the event is invariably well attended, writes Andy Wagner.

Like the Pro’s Open two weeks before, we were searching the skies for indications of what the conditions would be like. As it turned out the weather was exactly as two weeks before with the early starters getting through before the midday torrents. And, as two weeks before, I was lucky enough to capitalize on one of those early starts! I know these reports seem to be all about me but what can I do if I win the competition! Admittedly I had a very able partner in John Tierney who came in with four point birdies of his own, but our round felt as if we could do no wrong until we completely messed up the 17th for a glaring ‘blob’ on our card.

We thought in that moment that we had thrown the whole competition away right there. But the midday down pour and changing winds kept the rest of the field at bay leaving John and, in first place with 44 points ahead of Mike Williams and Chris Baker (43) and talented junior Max Nield partnered by Mark Smith (41). The charitable side of the day went very well for the Association and we’re already looking forward to hosting next years game.
